What Would YOU do?

I read a review recently on a Young Adult novel.  The main character was sixteen. Several reviewers panned the book because they said the girl made some bad (stupid) decisions.  I found myself thinking...that might be a valid criticism if the girl was an adult but she was sixteen...and deep down, was a nice person.

What I do find difficult to accept is a character who keeps making the same mistakes over and over or who doesn't grow and develop as the story progresses.  I want to believe that when the bomb goes off, my hero or heroine is going to be strong and capable and...heroic.  They would be the kind of person who would never trample anyone to get away. They would help.  And maybe, depending on the circumstances, they might even go toward the blast to help.
